Abstract:

The importance of certain subspaces of phase space, so-called Lagrangian tori, goes back to 19th century investigations of solutions of the equations of motion in classical mechanics. Later on, additional integrality constraints appeared in connection with the quantization of mechanical systems (Einsten). Modern mathematics has turned this into a topological question. Recently, inspiration from physics has re-entered the discussion, revealing an unexpectedly rich situation to us. I will introduce you to this question, and outline recent work of Auroux, Vianna, Tonkonog, and others, which has brought us much closer to a conclusion of that story.
